Scientists from University of Ghana Finds Sequenced genomes for COVID-19




Scientists at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens both at the University of Ghana have obtained information about the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic that has affected many countries globally.

A communiqué from the Public Affairs Directorate of the University of Ghana indicates that the scientists analysed 15 samples from some selected cases in Ghana to gain a comprehensive understanding of the differences of the virus in the country.

The samples were taken from travellers from UK, Norway, Hungary, India, United States, and the United Arab Emirates as well as nine from persons who had no history of travel and believed to have had community infections.

Per the statement, the Director of the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens, Professor Gordon Awandare is stated as saying that while there were some differences between the strains from the various countries, all the genomes have a resemblance to the strain isolated in the Wuhan Province where the outbreak began.

GHANA HEALTH SERVICE UPDATE ON COVID-19


24 out of the 25 cases from Eastern Region are from 1 camp of 245 industrial workers in Lower Manya Krobo District. All the other contact workers were tested and 23 more were detected as confirmed cases. The other 1 case is from Fanteakwa District.

The results of about 10,000 more samples in the coming week will determine the government’s next line of action in the fight against the outbreak of COVID-19 in Ghana, President Nana Akufo-Addo has disclosed. He says the outcome of these tests will give us a “clearer picture to enable us to take a decision on the way forward”. In a late-night televised address on Thursday, President Akufo-Addo mentioned that the results of the majority of the samples taken so far give a clear indication that the country is better positioned in terms of the number of positive cases and the level of lateral infections. “Whilst the results are encouraging in suggesting a limited number of positive cases and community spread, we expect to be able to test some ten thousand (10,000) additional samples in the coming week to give us a clearer picture to enable us to take a decision on the way forward,” he remarked. Ghana Health Service Hark back to Staff on study leave (COVID-19 )

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has recalled its staff on approved study leave across country, following a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country. A letter from the GHS, addressed to all Regional and Divisional Directors said this decision has become necessary, given the “increased workloads in the various facilities.” According to the GHS, those who have been recalled will be at post in order “to support in the management of affected persons.” Ghana has confirmed four new cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19), raising the total case count to 136. The four new cases were confirmed within the general population by the Ghana Health Service on the morning of Friday, March 27, 2020. Authorities say contact tracing has been initiated for the new cases. The new patients have since been isolated and are receiving treatment.
