LOCKED DOWN UPDATE DAY 1

The two-week partial lockdown of Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Kasoa is in force as Ghana begins its most drastic measure to fight the novel coronavirus pandemic. Ghana joins South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, Mali, among others, in Africa to have announced some restrictions of movement to curb the spread of the virus which has killed over 30,000 people across the globe. Ghana’s coronavirus case count has risen from 137 to 152 in the period between the  March 27 announcement of the partial lockdown  and its commencement today, Monday, March 30, 2020. One person has also died in the period raising Ghana’s death count to five. Whilst some roads have been devoid of activity, others have seen some police presence to enforce the lockdown. During the two-week partial lockdown, citizens in affected areas are advised to only leave their homes in search of essential items or activities. Former President John Dramani Mahama on Sunday presented one hundred sets of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to health workers at the Greater Accra Regional (Ridge) Hospital in Accra. The presentation, according to Mr. Mahama, follows reports of a shortage of PPE and other materials required by the frontline medical personnel at the hospital in their fight against the coronavirus disease. The Ridge Hospital has become, virtually, the main facility that is helping with the management of the coronavirus pandemic. 51 Doctors Dies after been tested positive on Coronavirus [COVID-19] at Italy

Italian Association of Doctors have confirmed the death of 51 doctors who all died after testing positive for coronavirus. The doctors succumbed to the disease as of Friday, according to CNN, citing the Italian Association of Doctors. The death toll comes after Filippo Anelli, the president of the association, on Thursday called for doctors in the country to be provided with more personal protective equipment (PPE). "The first thing to do is to protect healthcare workers, to make sure they are not the ones spreading the virus. Our doctors have been sent to war unarmed," Anelli told The Financial Times in a Thursday article. "The dead do not make a noise. Yet, the names of our dead friends, our colleagues, put here in black and white, make a deafening noise." President Nana Akufo-Addo has declared a partial lockdown of Accra and Kumasi effective 1 am on Monday, March 30, 2020. The lockdown which affects Accra, Tema and Kumasi will last for two weeks. The decision, according to the President is to help curb the spread of COVID-19 which has led to four deaths and infected some 137 people. President Nana Akufo-Addo made the declaration in a national address delivered on Friday, March 27, 2020. “Prevailing circumstances mean that stricter measures have to be put in place to contain and halt the spread of the virus within our country, especially in Accra, Tema, Kasoa and Kumasi, which have been identified by the Ghana Health Service as the ‘hotspots’ of the infections. Prime Minister Boris Johnson of UK has tasted Positive (COVID-19)

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has tested positive for coronavirus and is experiencing mild symptoms. Mr Johnson has mild symptoms and will self-isolate in Downing Street. “He was tested for coronavirus on the personal advice of England’s chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty,” a statement said. He will still be in charge of the government’s handling of the crisis, the statement added. The test was carried out at Number 10 by NHS staff. In a tweet, Mr Johnson said: “Over the last 24 hours I have developed mild symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus. I am now self-isolating, but I will continue to lead the government’s response via video-conference as we fight this virus. “Together we will beat this.” Mr Johnson was last seen on Thursday night, as he clapped outside No 10 as part of a nationwide gesture to thank NHS staff. There are more than 11,600 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK, and 578 people have died.

Ghana Health Service Hark back to Staff on study leave (COVID-19 )

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has recalled its staff on approved study leave across country, following a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country. A letter from the GHS, addressed to all Regional and Divisional Directors said this decision has become necessary, given the “increased workloads in the various facilities.” According to the GHS, those who have been recalled will be at post in order “to support in the management of affected persons.” Ghana has confirmed four new cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19), raising the total case count to 136. The four new cases were confirmed within the general population by the Ghana Health Service on the morning of Friday, March 27, 2020. Authorities say contact tracing has been initiated for the new cases. The new patients have since been isolated and are receiving treatment. Restrictions to stop COVID-19 spread and StayHome

The rising cases of Coronavirus in the country have heightened calls for Ghana to declare a lockdown in order to stop the spread. President Nana Akufo Addo  in response to the calls said although a lockdown remains an option, extensive consultations will be made to ensure that any decision the government takes, will be in the right direction. Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, Nana Akufo-Addo said government will consider all factors before a lockdown is announced. Upper West Regional capital, Wa has been confirmed a case of COVID-19

A case of COVID-19 has been confirmed in the Upper West Regional capital, Wa. The Regional Minister, Hafiz Bin Salih who addressed the media on Friday [March 27, 2020] said the patient is a 42-year-old Ghanaian who visited UK, Spain and returned to Ghana through Egypt. He added that the patient travelled from Accra to Wa via public transport before he started showing symptoms. A sample from the patient was taken and sent out for testing around 1pm on Thursday [March 26, 2020] and the region received the report of the result around noon on Friday. “…[He] returned to Ghana eight days ago through Egypt and travelled from Accra to Wa through public transport and has been confirmed COVID-19 positive. This is the first case of a suspect [in the Upper West Region] whose samples were taken for test and the result is that the patient is a COVID-19 patient,” the Minister said. Lockdown of Accra, Kumasi, Tema, and Obuasi have been Withdrawn by the Inspector -General of Police IGP

The Inspector-General of Police has withdrawn an order for a lockdown operation in Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Obuasi over the novel coronavirus pandemic. This is according to an internal police communique sighted by Citi News.The communique said, “further directives on the contents will be issued in due course.”An earlier document from the police sighted by Citi News indicated that police was putting a strategy in place for a lockdown. The police were to be supported by the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Immigration Service and the Bureau of National Investigation.The joint operation highlighted a number of roads and areas that were to be “sealed” during the lockdown. Incest and Defilement Court Jailed Man for 20 years

A 41-year old Gardener Martin Dogbe who subjected his 16-year-old daughter to consistent sexual abuse has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court. Dogbe is said to have commenced his sexual escapade, when the victim was 11 years old. Dogbe also gave his daughter drugs to abort anytime the victim become pregnant and also continued his sexual acts as soon as the fetus was aborted. Dogbe charged with defilement and incest pleaded guilty, saying he could not tell lies to the court and that he indeed had sex with the victim and impregnated her. According to Dogbe, he did the act anytime his wife was not around. The court presided over by Mrs. Christina Cann convicted Dogbe on his own plea and sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment on each charge. Sentences are to run concurrently.
